It is a strange moment I find myself in as I'm currently recording and editing reactions to the Harry Potter movies on my YouTube channel. Stories from an author who has also made herself a pariah by her own actions, albeit in a very different way.
Neil Gaiman potentially committed a crime. And in that, the most important thing by far is the women who were victimized. But far behind that, I am sad for the loss of something I loved. Sandman only came into my life a few years ago, but I ran solidly through all 11 of the very dense graphic novels.
I loved them and I was extremely excited when this show was announced and the first season was released. And to hear that a second season was coming. I respected Neil Gaiman immensely as an author. Followed all of the other adaptations of his work (Good Omens, American Gods) and I was working my way through the original works.
I'm glad they're getting a chance to release season 2, but it's sad. For so many reasons. The truth needs to come out. Justice needs to be served. Don't have heroes I guess. Or at least understand that you might find out one day that they are villains too.
My written feelings after reading David Goyer’s comments on the allegations against Neil Gaiman as reported by Variety, leading up to the release of Season 2 of Sandman on Netflix.
"When the accusations first came out, we were three weeks from finishing filming Season 2 — so we were very, very far down the path and Neil wasn’t as involved in Season 2 as he was in Season 1. Obviously, it’s complicated. I have tremendous respect for women that come forward in those situations. It’s really concerning, but I know that Netflix, at the time, felt, ‘God, we spent two years making this thing. There’s all these actors and writers and directors involved that, if we didn’t air it, wouldn’t be fully compensated for it.’ And so we just decided, we’re going to let this work speak for itself. But I’d be crazy to say it wasn’t weird."
